15 May Live specimens of Pinna nobilis found in Trieste
Researchers found a never-before-reported live specimen of Pinna nobilis off the coast of Miramare, where “Mare Caldo” project is taking place. This event lifted the morale of the staff of the LIFE Pinna project, managed by Triton Research and other partners, after the unsuccessful dives on the 30th anniversary of the Natura 2000 Network and Life Programme, in Trieste’s Canal Grande in Piazza Ponterosso, only a few days earlier. The project was a great success in terms of participation, not only among locals but also among tourists visiting that day.
But why were those places chosen for diving? The answer is very simple! There are rocky outcrops, also known as trezze or tegnue, where biodiversity is high. One can find corals, sponges, ascidians and above all our own Pinna nobilis. The shell of the so-called sea nacchera is often chosen by various species of fish as a resting place, as it is rich in anthozoans and polychaete worms.
