TRITON’s mission is to protect the sea.
We protect the sea because it is essential for our survival and the survival of all humanity. But also because the sea is our passion.
Precisely inspired by that passion and the love for the sea and nature. Triton aims to create a virtuous movement in defence of the environment. TRITON’s strategy is to coordinate a team of researchers who analyse specific aspects of the sea world.
TRITON’s research will be like a tree, in which each branch is independent, but always tied to all the other aspects necessary to understand the ecosystem and how it functions as a whole. TRITON’s strengths are the support and coordination of research, and innovative research methods to understand the sea. Our team of scientists aims to divert the usual path of traditional science.
Our team of interdisciplinary researchers are able to navigate underwater and obtain direct experience. This will give a boost and add value to research, managing to connect scientific notions with findings. TRITON has therefore chosen to dedicate itself primarily to a scientific vocation, to get to know the sea. Because you can’t protect what you don’t know.
It is important to divulge our work here at TRITON. Sharing scientific progress and knowledge with the general public is a historical moment, and has been of the utmost importance. We are experiencing an environmental emergency, no initiative can be successful if not supported by a large mass movement. By a strong and collective conscience.
It would be useless if only one family in a neighbourhood committed to recycling, certainly a laudable gesture, but completely useless if the rest of the community didn’t follow suit and engaged in the same practice. Raindrops, extraordinary per se, form rivers and generate floods when combined together. The whole world needs to understand how crucial the sea is for our existence.
It is essential that the underwater beauty of the Mediterranean becomes common knowledge. Because – as Commander Cousteau said – mankind protects what he loves. You cannot love without protecting. This is why TRITON works side by side with ISPRA, Liguria Region, PADI, and the Italian Marine Protected Areas in order to communicate and explore the fantastic underwater universe.
The disseminating work of TRITON through television programs, the use of the internet and social media can amplify and garnish exposure that can lead to a virtuous spiral. Our action was born in the spirit of Citizen Science because there will be many – divers, and sailors, people that are passionate naturalists – who want to contribute to science. Consisting of a potentially huge team that needs to be organized and guided so that the positive energy of thousands of enthusiasts is channelled in the right direction, having a benefit to official science.
