Protecting the sea is Triton’s mission. We protect the sea because it is essential for our survival and the survival of all humanity. But also because the sea is our passion.
Precisely inspired by that passion and the love for the sea and nature, Triton aims to create a virtuous movement in defence of the environment. TRITON’s strategy is to coordinate a team of researchers who analyse specific aspects of the sea world.
TRITON’s research will be like a tree, in which each branch is independent, but always tied to all the other aspects necessary to understand the ecosystem and its functioning as a whole. The support and coordination of the research, the choice of the new ways to research and innovative methods to understand the sea are TRITON’s strengths. Our team of scientists aims to leave the usual path of traditional science.
The team of interdisciplinary researchers is able to navigate, go underwater and get direct experience. This will give a boost and add value to research, managing to connect scientific notions with findings. TRITON has therefore chosen to dedicate itself primarily to a scientific vocation, to get to know the sea. Because you can’t protect what you don’t know.
It is important to divulge our work at TRITON. Sharing scientific progress and knowledge with the civil society has never been more important than this historical moment. As we are experiencing an environmental emergency, no initiative can be successful if not supported by a large mass movement. By a strong and conscious collective conscience.
Trivializing, it would be useless if only one family in a neighbourhood committed to recycling. It would certainly be a laudable gesture, but completely useless if the rest of the community didn’t follow suit and engaged with the same strength and determination. Raindrops, extraordinary per se, form rivers and generate floods when combined together. The whole community needs to understand how crucial the sea is in our existence.
It is essential that everyone is aware of the underwater beauty of the Mediterranean. Because – as Commander Cousteau said – mankind protects what he loves. And you cannot love without protecting. This is why TRITON works side by side with the Italian Marine Protected Areas, communicating and exposing that fantastic universe by joining forces with the Ministry of the Environment. Often achieving great success.
The dissemination work of TRITON through television programs, the use of the internet and social media can amplify and multiply in a virtuous spiral. Our action was born in the spirit of Citizen Science, because there will be many – simple divers, or sailors, or simply passionate naturalists – who want to contribute to science. It is a potentially huge army which needs to be organized and guided so that the positive energy of thousands of enthusiasts is channeled in the right direction, in order to be useful to official science.
